    BACKGROUND
    :
    Established by Executive Order 11231 on 8 July 1965 the Vietnam Service Medal was awarded to all members of the Armed Forces of the United States who served in Vietnam and contiguous waters or airspace between 3 July 1965 and 28 March 1973. In addition, personnel serving in Thailand. Laos and Cambodia in direct support of operations in Vietnam during the same time period are also eligible for this medal.
    CRITERIA
    :
    An individual serving in any of the above areas must be:
    1.
    Regularly assigned to an organization for 1 day that participates in or operates in direct support of military operations.
    2.
    Regularly assigned to or attached to a naval vessel under the same conditions as above.
    3.
    Actually, participate as an aircraft crewmember in at least one flight into airspace above Vietnam in support of military operations.
    4.
    Sere for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days on temporary duty in the qualifying areas.
